Tareq joined The Independent newspaper as its Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital correspondent in 2002. This was his first professional attachment to any organization as a pay-roll staff and also was his first step towards journalism.
Bulbul Ahmed, the then Chief Photographer of The Independent newspaper helped a lot to get him in creating the post.
He continued the job for two years.
